Where are the Berkshires? Are the Berkshires in New York or Massachusetts?

Many people think of western Massachusettts when they think about where the Berkshires are located. And they aren't wrong. The westernmost county in Massachusetts is Berkshire County, which makes up a large part of the Berkshires.

As a cultural region, the Berkshires also includes the Taconic Mountains in Columbia County, NY. Columbia County is located just west of the New York-Massachusetts state border and extends west to the Hudson River. So part of the Berkshires are located in New York as well.

As a geologic region, the Berkshires are part of the Appalachian Mountains. Average elevations in the Berkshires are about 700 to 1,200 feet. Hundreds of millions of years of erosion have shaped this highland region into the rounded hills we see today.

Living in the Berkshires means living in a predominantly rural region populated with mostly small towns and cities.

Our best advice when looking for Berkshire County homes for sale is to develop a list of homebuying criteria to share with your Stone House Properties broker. Our brokers have a thorough knowledge of what's on the market in Berkshire County. They can match your criteria with available inventory and new listings.

Your homebuying criteria should include essentials like number of bedrooms, number of baths, overall living space, and price range, but don't stop there. Include "must haves" and "nice to have" features in your list. Your "must haves" might include an updated kitchen, room for guests, or a first-floor primary suite.

One item to include in your homebuying criteria is whether you're looking for a primary residence or a second home. If it's the latter, think about where you want the second home to be located and how you'll use it. Many people who buy second homes in the Berkshires choose locations near outdoor recreation areas, for example.
