Living in Richmond, MA: Area Experts Weigh in

With its charming views, wide open spaces, and ease of access to some of Berkshire and Columbia County’s most attractive features, Richmond is a seriously underrated town.

At Stone House Properties, our agents frequently represent buyers and sellers in Richmond–some even call Richmond home. We’re happy to lend our extensive local knowledge to some of the most frequently asked questions about the area.

Why are people moving to Richmond, MA?

Similarly to Alford, Mass, many primary and second-home owners are drawn to Richmond when they want that perfect mix of privacy and accessibility.

By nature of Richmond being quite rural (a recent Census count put the town at about 1,400 residents) many homes offer a good amount of privacy. Whether it’s through large lot sizes or surrounding wooded areas–including lots of public land for exploring–you’re likely to find a home that enables you to only see your neighbors when you want to.

How close is Richmond to Pittsfield, Lenox, and the New York border?

While it’s easy to feel as if you're in your own world in Richmond, the town is perfectly positioned to find everything you need just a short drive away.

The heart of Pittsfield is about 20 minutes away from Richmond, providing ease of access to not only Pittsfield’s theatrical venues, but to its grocery chains, box stores, and to Berkshire Medical Center, the area’s largest hospital. You don’t have to compromise on the rural feel to get more urban amenities at your fingertips.

Richmond itself doesn’t have its own bustling downtown. However, many of the Berkshires’ most charming Main Streets are so close, they’ll feel as if they’re your own. You may only be 5-10 minutes away from Stockbridge, West Stockbridge, or Lenox in your Richmond home. Headed further South, Lee and Great Barrington are still a manageable 20-30 minute drive.

Richmond also borders our neighbors in New York. This location unlocks areas to explore like Chatham, Canaan and Austerlitz in Columbia County. It’s a breeze to jump on I-90 in either direction from Richmond, making the area ideal for residents of Boston (around 2 hours away) and New York (3 hours) to regularly visit their retreat from city life.

Richmond homes come in a wide range of styles and price points. The perfect starter home, the customizable DIY project, and the grand estate can all be found in the town’s borders. Like much of the Berkshires, you’ll find a few contemporary homes mixed in with lots of Colonials, Capes, ranch-style and farmhouse properties.

What is there to do in and around Richmond, MA?

Are there hiking trails, parks, or lakes nearby?

Richmond residents have a wealth of outdoor recreation at their doorstep. Hikes and walks of all levels are abundant nearby, and perfect for fans of birdwatching and big views. Within town limits, you have Hollow Fields and Tracy Brook Wildlife Sanctuary–but with Yokun Ridge to the East, the Pittsfield State Forest to the North, and Monument Mountain down south, there’s always a new patch of earth to explore.

Many are drawn to Richmond to enjoy the tranquil beauty of Richmond Pond. If you aren’t able to nab a waterfront home like this listing on Shore Rd from Lori Rose, Richmond residents can swim and launch boats from the town beach. Around the rest of the Berkshires, the Stockbridge Bowl, Onota Lake, Pontoosuc Lake and more are also within easy reach.

The nature of the Berkshires is available for you to enjoy year-round–from your spring and summer hikes, to leaf-peeping in the fall, to snowshoeing and skiing in the winter. Richmond is surrounded by havens for skiers and snowboarders, including Bousquet, Butternut, and Catamount resorts.

What attractions are close to Richmond?

If intimate theatres draw you to the Berkshires more than wide open spaces, you’re likely already aware of its proximity to many new and longstanding institutions. In Richmond, you can essentially make Tanglewood your personal park and backyard–seeing shows, walking the grounds, and doing yoga during morning BSO rehearsals is no longer a special event but part of your weekly routine.

Both well-known and brand-new theatrical works can be found from Berkshire Theatre Group and Barrington Stage Company, who have venues across Pittsfield and Stockbridge. Shakespeare & Company in Lenox might offer you a new take on a classic work, while The Foundry in West Stockbridge brings in acts that are entirely unexpected.

While most of these venues put the bulk of their programming during the summer season, The Triplex Cinema in Great Barrington is a reliable cultural fix all year long. The independent movie theatre programs new blockbusters, old favorites and lesser-known treasures. They’ll even bring in well-known filmmakers and actors for guest talks, especially when the Berkshire Independent Film Festival comes into town.

What is the lifestyle like in Richmond, MA?

Can I find farms, fresh food, and local markets?

The Stone House team has a few favorite spots for enjoying the fresh air and locally-made goods in Richmond.

In Richmond, there are two amazing spots for sitting outside with loved ones and a glass of wine in hand. On the weekends, you’ll see cars flood to Balderdash Cellars for their fix of wine, mountain views, and gab sessions with friends. Balderdash brings in a variety of local food trucks and musicians to round out the experience, and their events space keeps the good times going with lots of weddings, local fundraisers, yoga classes and more.

The Furnace Brook Winery at Hilltop Orchards is a great spot if your crew calls for a little more variety than wine alone. You’ll also find artisanal beers and ciders for the tasting in their taproom, with a sprawling view of their apple trees serving as your ambience.

In terms of goodies to stock your own kitchen with, the farm store at Bartlett’s Orchard brings the flavors of the Berkshires into one cozy hub. As a local, you’ll be free to draw your own conclusions on the great debate of “the best cider donut in the Berkshires”–but for us, it’s Bartlett’s all the way!

Is Richmond a good place for wellness and nature lovers?

Getting out and exploring the great outdoors doesn’t have to be a solitary experience in Richmond. The Berkshires attracts plenty of travelers seeking restorative wellness experiences. Two world-renowned centers for wellness and health, Canyon Ranch and Kripalu, are your neighbors in Lenox. Both host spa services, retreats, classes–and Kripalu offers discounts to local residents who want to take advantage of their many offerings!

Vacationers who attend the Berkshire Yoga Festival each year won’t have to worry about lodgings anymore–you’re only a 30 minute drive away from Jiminy Peak for the event in June.
