Welcome to Kinderhook

This gem of a community delights residents with its charming assortment of shops, stores, and restaurants, as well as plenty of places to explore art, history, and the outdoors. Kinderhook is where President Martin Van retired after his term in office. His estate, known as Lindenwald, was his home from 1841 until his death in 1862. Today the estate is part of the National Park Service. Kinderhook is a town of about 8,330 people. It consists of two villages, one of which is also called Kinderhook. The other is the village of Valatie. The village of Kinderhook has a population of about 1,170. Valatie is slightly bigger with a populationof about 1,785.

Columbia County Historical Society
 
  • Headquartered in Kinderhook, the Columbia County Historical Society maintains four historic properties in town. Their holdings include the circa 1819 James Vanderpoel House, also known as the House of History, where the society runs a museum and museum shop
  • The Columbia County Historical Society also owns the 1737 Luykas Van Alen House and the 1850 Ichabod Crane Schoolhouse. Washington Irving based Ichabod Crane, the central character in his story "The Legend of Sleep Hollow," on a schoolteacher who taught there.
Kinderhook Memorial Library

  • Thirty thousand square feet of space provides space for large-scale exhibitions of works by artists within and outside of Jack Shainman Gallery’s program.
  • The School's inaugural exhibit in 2014 featured a retrospective of works by scultor and performance artist Nick Cave. The show displayed a number of his acclaimed Soundsuits.
Martin Van Buren National Historic Site
 
  • Martin Van Buren served as the eighth American president.
  • Martin Van Buren National Historic Site preserves the home to which he retired after completing his presidential term in office.
  • Known as Lindenwald, the mansion has 36 rooms. Visitors can tour the mansion and the grounds.
