Welcome to Dalton

The Central Berkshire town of Dalton is forever linked to Crane and Company, the papermaker founded there in 1801 and still the largest employer in the town. Crane has been the sole supplier of banknote paper for U.S. currency since 1879. Dalton's population of about 6,700 is largely centered along the East Branch of the Housatonic River, the same river that provided water power to the Crane paper mill. The Crane Museum of Papermaking, now a popular attraction, is located in what was the rag room of Crane’s Old Stone Mill, which dates back to 1844.
